  1. Day 1

    Colombo to Kandy, by way of the elephants

    Met at the airport and driven up to Kandy, about three and a half hours, stopping at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage and a spice garden. The city tour ends at the Temple of the Tooth and a Kandyan dance show.

  2. Day 2

    Into the tea

    The botanical gardens at Peradeniya, then the climb into hill country: a working tea plantation and factory, Ramboda falls, and Nuwara Eliya, which the British built to feel like home.

  3. Day 3

    Waterfalls, then the sea

    Devon and St Clair's falls, the green river valley at Kitulgala, and on to the coast at Bentota. About five and a half hours of driving, and most of it is the point.

  4. Day 4

    Turtles and mangroves

    The turtle hatchery at Kosgoda in the morning and a boat safari through the Madu River mangroves, then an afternoon on the beach, with water sports there for anyone who wants them.

    Breakfast, then the two-hour drive to Bandaranaike International for the flight home.
