Azerbaijan burns, politely. Gas seeping out of the ground keeps a hillside alight at Yanar Dag and kept a fire temple in business at Ateshgah, while Baku stacks a walled medieval city against three glass towers shaped like flames. Behind it all sit the Caucasus, two hours north at Guba and Shahdag. There are two ways in: a winter city break, or the Grand Prix weekend, when the circuit runs through those same old walls.
