Uzbekistan is where the Silk Road left its receipts. Registan Square, the tiled avenue of Shah-i-Zinda and the Kalyan minaret that Genghis Khan is said to have spared are all still standing, in turquoise. Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara look far apart on a map and are not, thanks to a train that does 250 km an hour. One trip threads all three together in four nights.
