The Maldives is a country with almost no land in it: twelve hundred islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, most of them smaller than a city block, almost all of them ringed by reef. One resort to an island is the usual arrangement, so the island is the holiday. Getting there is part of it, a seaplane low over the atolls with the water changing colour underneath. One stay, four nights, half on the beach and half over the water.
